Borrowing & Returns

2 min read 14 views

How are due dates calculated? The system uses your school's borrowing rules. It adds the loan period (number of days) to the checkout date. If the due date falls on a Saturday or Sunday, it moves to the next Monday. Different rules can apply based on who is borrowing (student vs. teacher), what type of material it is (book vs. periodical), and which campus.

How many books can a student borrow? By default, 3 books. But your school can set different limits. Teachers typically have a higher limit (for example, 10). The limit depends on your school's borrowing rules.

What happens when a book is returned late? A fine is automatically calculated and recorded. The fine depends on how many days late the book is, minus any grace period, multiplied by the daily rate, up to a maximum amount. Your librarian can tell you the exact rates for your school.

Can a book be renewed? Yes. By default, a book can be renewed up to 2 times. You can renew online through "My Loans" or ask the librarian. You cannot renew if you have overdue books or unpaid fines.

What happens when a book is lost? The librarian processes the return as "Lost." The book is removed from the collection, and two charges may apply: an overdue fine (if the book was also late) and a replacement fee.

Can students place holds on books themselves? Yes. Students can place holds through the library catalog. When the book becomes available, the student is notified and has a limited time (usually 3 days) to pick it up.

What is a clearance? A clearance is a check to see if a student has any library obligations. A student is "cleared" if they have no unreturned books, no unpaid fines, and no other blocks. Schools typically require library clearance before enrollment, graduation, or releasing school records.
